If you’re a new student or if you just need some revision, then the Library’s SmartSkills tutorials may be what you are looking for.
SmartSkills tutorials are an interactive way of learning the information skills you need for your studies. You can work through them at your own pace, as the tutorials take you step by step through real examples. There’s even a quiz at the end of each one if you want to check your understanding of what you’ve just learned. At this time of year, you might find these very useful:
- Having trouble getting started on an assignment? The ‘Topic Analysis’ tutorial will show you how to approach your assignment questions and work out what information you need. It takes you through how to identify the key concepts, find the best search words and choose the most relevant resources.
- Need to find books and journals for assignments? The catalogue module is a great way to learn how to do basic, advanced or journal searches, as well as find electronic books, Reserve materials and the resources listed in your subject outlines. You’ll become familiar with what things mean, what you can do and where you can find information about the library resources.
- Want to search the databases for information on a topic? See how databases work and find out the basics of database searching through practice in using three of our most popular databases – EBSCOhost, OVID and Informit. Learn how to print, save or email your results.
