Turn off for Earth Hour

“Earth Hour 2008: Turn off Your LightsOn March 29 at 8pm local time, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney in Australia and Christchurch in New Zealand are among this year’s major world cities switching off lights for one hour during Earth Hour 2008.The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on March 31 last year. This year, Earth Hour has gone international with participant cities not only in Australia and New Zealand but also in Canada, Denmark, Fiji, Ireland, Israel, Philippines, Romania, Sweden, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.Earth Hour aims to promote electricity conservation to lower carbon emissions by asking households and businesses, including government entities, to switch off lights for one hour.Last year as many as 2.2 million people in Sydney participated in Earth Hour, plunging the city into near total darkness. It would be good if more people — including those in non-participating towns and cities — joined Earth Hour this year and switched off their lights from 8pm to 9pm on Saturday, local time.Come on, mate, let’s do it.”
