The Bradley Paper

The Federal Government has released a discussion paper for its review of higher education, which will be finished by the end of the year. The discussion paper shows it will focus on issues like funding, research, links to industry and social inclusion. Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard says the review will allow universities to specialise in particular areas. “We think for too long the country has treated universities as if they were a one-size-fits-all job,” she said. “They’re not. Each university in this country, in my view, is straining to define its distinctive mission, its distinctive role in the nation’s future.” Ms Gillard hopes the review will lead to one of the biggest shake-ups of the sector in decades. “We’re interested in a genuine collaboration, the best of ideas brought together to define the future for Australian universities,” she said.
