Highlights of New DVDs, 28 July – 3 August 2008

Each week CSU Library adds hundreds of new resources to our catalogue, including books, DVDs, CDs, and electronic resources. The following selection highlights some of the new DVDs added to the collection last week.   • Bulgaria’s abandoned children Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. This film is a heart-rending look into the life of one such institution. Director Kate Blewett visits a children’s care home in Bulgaria where 75 unwanted children are growing up, and investigates the conditions in which the children live. Check Availability
  • Beyond sorry Features the personal stories of two aboriginal women, Zita Wallace who was removed from her family at the age of eight; and her aunt, Aggie. Presents also Ron Wallace’s standpoint, as a white man married to someone from the stolen generation, and from a different cultural background. Check Availability
  • Sexy Inc. : our children under the influence – Analyses the hypersexualization of our environment and its noxious effects on young people. Experts criticize an unhealthy culture created by advertising and the media, and the many examples shown illustrate how children are reduced to consumers bombarded with images of girls treated as purely sexual objects – Check Availability
  • Pixar shorts films collection. Volume 1. – A collection of computer animated short films created by Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios. Check Availability
  • Benny’s video – Benny, a 14-year-old boy from a wealthy middle class family, left largely to his own devices by his parents, finds an emotional substitute in the world of video, but when he invites a young girl to the empty apartment, what begins as a shy love affair ends in a grisly catastrophe. Check Availability
  • Code unknown – On a busy Paris boulevard, a youth scornfully tosses a crumpled paper bag into the outstretched hands of a beggar woman. This is the bond which, for an instant, links several very different characters: Anne (Binoche), an actress; her war photographer boyfriend Georges; his farmer father and younger brother Jean, who, contrary to his father’s wishes, has no interest in inheriting the farm; Amadou, a music teacher for deaf-mute children, and his family, who originate from Africa; and Maria, a Romanian immigrant.   • Funny games – When a wealthy family arrive for a week at their lakeside villa, their idyll doesn’t last long. While father and son sail the lake in their yacht, mother Anna is asked by a neighbour’s house guests for a handful of eggs. But their neat, educated appearance betrays a sinister intention, and Anna realises these two men play games. Cat-and-mouse games. Check Availability
  • Hidden – A series of anonymous videotapes and drawings unsettle a bourgeois family and as they get closer to solving the mystery of who is sending them, unpleasant secrets from the past rear their heads in a particularly extreme way. Check Availability
  • Kenny – Follow Kenny, the affable port-a-loo plumber as he tackles every septic challenge that comes his way, juggling family tensions, fatherhood and sewage with charm, humour and unflinching dignity. Check Availability
  • The chronicles of Narnia :The lion, the witch and the wardrobe – Based on the book by C.S. Lewis. Check Availability
  • The Piano teacher – Erika Kohut, a middle aged piano teacher who has lived with her mother all of her life, develops an obsession for Walter Klemmer, her young student. Check Availability
  • 71 fragments of a chronology of chance – Inspired by a real life shooting spree in Vienna on December 23, 1993, this film addressess the various societal influences and cultural factors that drive a young middle-class man to commit such an act. Check Availability
  • The seventh continent – A married couple and their young daughter live a mundane life until they perform a drastic act of violence. Check Availability
  • Time of the wolf – A bourgeois family arrive at their weekend home in the country, only to find that the house is already occupied by another family. Within the space of a few minutes, father Georges has been shot dead, their car and supplies seized, and mother Anna, teenage daughter Eva and 10 year-old son Ben are forced out into the night to fend for themselves.   • Transformers – For centuries, two races of robotic aliens – the Autobots and the Decepticons – have waged a war, with the fate of the universe at stake. When the battle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by young Sam Witwicky. Check Availability
  • 2:37 – A contemporary ensemble drama telling the complex tale of six high school students whose lives are interwoven with situations that so many of today’s youth are faced with. Check Availability
  • The ghost squad – Tense, urgent and gripping cop drama which deals with the murky morality of policing the police. Each episode features the undercover internal investigation team stamping out corruption within police ranks. But this isn’t a world of heroes and villains, cops and robbers. Here, everyone carries a badge. Check Availability
  • Mawson : life and death in Antarctica – Australian adventurer Tim Jarvis retraces Mawson’s gruelling experience to find the answer to how Mawson lived in 1912, after the loss of his supplies and his companions plunged him into one of the most amazing feats of physical and mental endurance of all time.   • Who do you think you are? – This fascinating series delves into the family history of celebrities, tracing their ancestry and revealing secrets from their pasts, as well as giving viewers the tools to dig into their own pasts. – Check the New Titles list for more discs of this series.
