Kristine Elliott, and other researchers from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council comment on the growing concerns that Australia will be unable to meet future demand for suitably skilled scientists. A number of different factors are behind such concerns. First is the trend in developed countries towards decreasing number of students opting to study science at school and university. Secondly, the changing nature of contemporary scientific practice means that there is an increasing need for science graduates to possess skills, which in the past may not have been considered valuable to a scientific career.
