Are you experiencing the joys of referencing? Referencing is the acknowledgement of information sources in your work; it is the appropriate way to give credit to the original owner of an idea, piece of writing or creative work. All assignments at CSU are expected to be fully referenced unless advised otherwise. If you’re having trouble with referencing the Library has a few tips that might help!
The Academic Referencing Tool (ART) provides detailed examples for the referencing style APA 6, and includes examples of in-text citations, direct quotations, paraphrasing and footnoting. Bibliography/Reference List and detailed style notes are also available. Most schools at CSU use the APA referencing style, however you should always check your subject outline to determine specific referencing requirements.
Another great tool is the CSU APA Referencing Summary, based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). This summary gives examples of the APA referencing style for a number of commonly used information sources. If you need a more comprehensive set of reference examples, try reading Chapter 7- Reference Examples in the Publication Manual of the APA.
The American Psychological Association has a great Style Blog, that is run by a group of experts who work with APA Style every day. They publish weekly posts to talk about what they love – writing, publishing, and APA Style. The blog posts cover a variety of areas, including reference citations of every sort, grammar and usage, the publication process, and social media. You can even Contact an expert with your tricky questions!
If you would like to try using the EndNote software, you can check out the Library’s EndNote resource guide. EndNote can be downloaded for free from the Library website, and can help you to cite your sources correctly and organise your research and notes. The Library runs online EndNote workshops throughout the year, for both PC and Mac, so keep an eye on our Online Library Workshops for the next round of EndNote classes!
If you’re in the Student Portal, why not go through the Library’s Referencing at CSU page for the whats, whys and hows of referencing, and a great range of links and videos that may help you with your sticky questions. If you have additional questions about referencing, please contact the ALLaN team, who are your CSU referencing experts! Good luck!
