After renewed negotiations, the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) has reached an in-principle agreement with global academic publisher Elsevier. This is a significant outcome for the sector, including substantial cost reductions and a commitment to address longstanding pricing inequities.
Please see the CAUL media release for full details.
- Access to Elsevier content (ScienceDirect): There will be no disruption to access for Charles Sturt University researchers and students in 2026.
- Publishing (open access): Uncapped hybrid open access publishing across the full Elsevier portfolio (including Cell Press and The Lancet) will be available in 2026.
This outcome was made possible by strong sector-wide unity, with Australian and New Zealand universities standing together to support CAUL’s negotiating position. It also completes the renegotiation of all four major publisher agreements this year, a genuinely impressive achievement for CAUL and the broader academic sector.
