Looking for the Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal, the Wagga Wagga Advertiser and Riverine Reporter, the Albury Banner and Wodonga Express, the Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate …or another paper?
Newspapers are a rich resource for historical research but it can be hard to know how and where to find old papers.
If you are looking for old issues of local and national newspapers, try Trove, the National Library’s online search service. In 2007, the National Library started the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program aimed at the preservation of, and access to, every newspaper published in Australia.
Now there’s an amazing amount of content available online, with full-text searchability . These newspapers cover all states and territories and from the earliest published newspaper in 1803 to the mid 20th century, when copyright applies. There are also a few newspapers in languages other than English.
Remember that new content is being added daily. If content isn’t yet available online, you can use Trove to find out when it might be digitised, or where it might be held. Be on the lookout for 50 newspaper titles that have just been added to Trove and are coming soon.
Trove can be found via our databases page, along with the other newspaper databases:
