Bring Out Your Dead!

Bring Out Your Dead is a Library initiative helping Charles Sturt researchers find and share eligible past publications through our institutional repository, CRO. We know that many researchers have older papers that were published behind a paywall, but did you know that a number of them could be made openly available today, simply by depositing the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in CRO. 

Why now? 

Open Access articles come with a number of real benefits, including better citation rates.  

Open Access expectations from funders and institutions keep growing, but for a lot of researchers, their back catalogues were published before those expectations existed. We also know Open Access fees can be too expensive for most to pay. That doesn’t mean the work is stuck behind a paywall forever, it means there’s a backlog of “eligible dead” sitting in inboxes, on hard drives and in shared folders, waiting to be unlocked or resurrected.  

What’s involved? 

You don’t need to hunt down every manuscript yourself or become an expert in publishing permissions. Here’s how it works: 

1. Register your interest: let us know you’re in. 

2. We check your publication record: the Library team identifies which of your outputs are eligible for Green Open Access. 

3. You track down the AAM 

4. Send them ack to us and we’ll handle the rest: We’ll deposit the manuscript in CRO and check it against publisher permissions.

That’s right – we all love A little friendly competition 

To sweeten the deal, we’re running the Bring Out Your Dead competition between now and the end of September. For each faculty there is a prize for the researcher who makes the most work openly available through CRO while the competition is running.  

So if you’ve got a folder full of old accepted manuscripts, now’s a great time to dig them out. Even if you’re not sure – get in touch and we can check for you. Every publication counts.
